ARAI

ARAI, established in 1966 by the Indian automotive industry in collaboration with the Government of India, ARAI is the country's premier automotive Research and Development organization. An autonomous body affiliated to the Ministry of Heavy Industries, Government of India, ARAI has been recognized as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (SIRO) by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. ARAI is also one of the principal Testing and Certification Agencies notified under Rule 126 of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules (CMVR), 1989.

For over five decades, ARAI has played a pivotal role in supporting the advancement of safe, efficient, reliable, and environmentally sustainable mobility solutions. Working closely with the Government, automotive manufacturers, component suppliers, research institutions, and other stakeholders, ARAI contributes significantly to the development of automotive technologies, standards, regulations, testing methodologies, and certification frameworks that support the growth of the mobility sector in India.

ARAI's activities span a wide spectrum of areas including Engineering Services, Certification & Standardization, Research & Development, Technology Development, Knowledge Services, Skill Development, and Policy Support. The organization provides technical expertise and solutions to automotive OEMs, component manufacturers, MSMEs, start-ups, government bodies, and organizations from both automotive and non-automotive sectors.

The institute houses state-of-the-art laboratories and advanced testing facilities in areas such as Vehicle Engineering, Emission Measurement, Noise-Vibration-Harshness (NVH), Structural Dynamics, Powertrain Engineering, Active and Passive Safety, Automotive Electronics, Vehicle Electrification, Materials Engineering, Computer-Aided Engineering, Calibration Technologies, Forging & Heat Treatment Research, and Environmental Engineering. Recent additions such as the E-Mobility Centre of Excellence, Environmental Research Laboratory, Virtual Calibration Centre, and Futuristic Adaptive Smart Techniques (FAST) Laboratory further strengthen ARAI's capabilities in addressing future mobility challenges.

As a trusted technical partner to various Ministries, Central and State Government agencies, ARAI actively supports the formulation and implementation of policies, standards, and regulations related to transportation, energy efficiency, vehicle emissions, road safety, and sustainable mobility. The organization has played a key role in India's transition towards cleaner transportation technologies, including electric mobility, alternative fuels, intelligent transportation systems, connected vehicles, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), and future mobility solutions.

Beyond the automotive sector, ARAI contributes extensively towards societal welfare and environmental sustainability. The organization undertakes scientific studies on air quality, emission inventory development, source apportionment, and environmental impact assessment to help governments identify pollution sources and formulate effective mitigation strategies. Through evidence-based research and advanced analytical techniques, ARAI assists policymakers in developing action plans aimed at improving urban air quality and public health.

ARAI's multidisciplinary teams of researchers, scientists, and technical experts leverage theoretical, experimental, numerical, and policy-driven approaches to address complex challenges faced by industry, government, and society. The organization continuously develops innovative solutions that support sustainable industrial growth, environmental protection, energy conservation, and technological self-reliance.

The institute's research initiatives are closely aligned with India's national priorities and contribute towards achieving several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through technology development, environmental research, skill enhancement, and knowledge dissemination, ARAI supports the nation's journey toward sustainable development, cleaner mobility, reduced emissions, enhanced road safety, and improved quality of life for citizens.

Knowledge creation and dissemination form an important pillar of ARAI's activities. Through its renowned ARAI Academy, technical publications, training programmes, workshops, conferences, and industry interactions, ARAI actively promotes knowledge sharing, capacity building, and professional development for engineers, researchers, policymakers, and industry professionals.

Headquartered in Pune, Maharashtra, with facilities at Kothrud, Chakan (ARAI-FID and ARAI-HTC), a regional centre in Chennai, and international representation in China and Korea, ARAI serves a diverse customer base across India and globally. Supported by a highly skilled workforce of more than 700 professionals, ARAI continues to pursue excellence in research, innovation, testing, certification, and societal development.
